'Diggers add Colbray to complete 2009-10 roster

Dean Colbray, a 6’0” guard from Pasco, WA, has signed a letter-of-intent to join the Montana Tech men’s basketball team, announced head coach Nate Larson.

Colbray is a transfer from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California, a member of the NAIA’s Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC).  Dean started for the Sea Lions and averaged 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals per game.  His season high came against NAIA perennial power Concordia University when he tallied 29 points, 5 rebounds, & 3 steals in a GSAC conference game.

“Dean will add needed depth and experience to our backcourt and brings superior athleticism, scoring ability, and a lock-down defensive mindset to the floor,” said Larson.  “He put up some good numbers in one of the toughest leagues in the NAIA, and we expect him to bring that same type of productive play to our team and provide valuable leadership for our younger guards.

”“Our 2009-10 recruiting class is complete with Dean’s signing, and we will have high expectations for next season’s squad.  With the addition of transfers Colbray, 6’7” forward Kellen Hasquet, and 6’8” post Eric Schippers to our very solid returning nucleus, we feel we have assembled a team capable of competing at a very high level in the Frontier Conference,” concluded Larson.

Dean will study Professional & Technical Communications and is the son of Dean and Wanda Colbray.

Billings West's Duke joins Montana Tech Hoops

Stanton Duke, a 6’2” guard from Billings, MT, has signed a letter of intent to attend and play basketball at Montana Tech, announced head coach Nate Larson.

Duke helped lead Billings West High to a 2nd place finish at the Class AA State Tourney this past season and a 1st place finish in 2007-08.

In his senior year, Stanton was second on the team in scoring at 11 points per game and led the Bears in three-point shooting at 45% and assists at 3.2 per game.  For his efforts, Stanton earned Class AA First Team All-State Honors.

Stanton was one of the premier guards on one of the best teams in the entire state.  He comes from an outstanding high school program and was well mentored under Coach Robison.  He is an outstanding playmaker, has a great shooting touch, and is a consummate team player.  Stanton  is a very bright and talented young man and is exemplary of the type of student-athlete we want in our program,” said Larson.

Stanton will pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering and is the son of David and Roxanne Duke.

Oredigger Men sign Washington post

Eric Schippers, a 6’8” post from Kingston, Washington, has signed a letter-of-intent to join the Montana Tech men’s basketball program, announced head coach Nate Larson.

Over the past two seasons, Schippers competed for Edmonds Community College (WA), a member of the NWAACC (Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges).  In 2008-09, Eric averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds per game while shooting 48% from the field and an outstanding 74% at the free throw line.

“Eric is a very hard-working post with active feet and a soft shooting touch out to the 3-point line.  He is a crafty southpaw scorer around the basket and has a great rebounding nose for the ball.  We are excited to add Eric to our program,” said Larson.

“With Eric’s size and length, he will add much needed depth to our frontline.  In addition to recent signee Kellen Hasquet & returners Josh Monagle, Dirk Anderson, & Ivan Sljivar, we have a very strong core of big men who will be able to score, rebound, and defend with the best bigs in the Frontier,” concluded Larson.

Eric will pursue a degree in Applied Health Science and is the son of Rob & Suzanne Schippers.

Sam Dembek, a 6’3” guard from Winnett, MT, will walk-on and join the Montana Tech men’s basketball program, announced head coach Nate Larson.

Dembek averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds, & 4 assists per game for Winnett-Grass Range High School and led the Rams to the Class C State Tournament this past season.  For his efforts, Sam earned Class C First Team All-State and 1st Team All-Conference honors.

A well rounded student-athlete, Dembek participated in numerous activities throughout high school including band, choir, track, and cross country and was named Academic All-State all four years.  Sam also earned Class C All-State honors in cross country by placing in the top 5 at the state meet in both his junior and senior years.

“Sam is an excellent all-around basketball player with a huge upside.  He has good size and length for a guard and chances are good he has a few more inches left to grow.  Athletically, Sam has great endurance and outstanding leaping ability—evident by him winning two slam-dunk contests this spring.  He is very sound defensively and will get better with experience.  Overall, we feel Sam is a great fit for us at Tech and are excited to help him develop into a fine Frontier Conference student-athlete,” said Larson.

Sam will pursue a degree in Petroleum Engineering and is the son of Dave and Catherine Dembek.

'Diggers sign first recruit for 2009-10 season

Kellen Hasquet, a 6’7” forward from Missoula, MT, has accepted a scholarship offer and will join the Montana Tech men’s basketball program, head coach Nate Larson announced.

Hasquet is a 2005 graduate of Missoula Sentinel High School, where he excelled on the basketball floor and averaged 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and over 2 blocks per game.  Kellen earned several post-season accolades after his season year including Class AA 1st Team All-State, McDonalds All-American nominee, and a roster spot on the Montana/Wyoming All-Star game.

“We are excited that Kellen chose to join our program.  He is a proven talent with good experience, and he will immediately bolster our 3-4 positions with great size, length, and outstanding shooting ability.  Kellen is a great fit for us both on and off the floor, and he will help us climb up the Frontier ladder next season and beyond," said Larson.

Hasquet originally signed with Carroll College and averaged 6 points per game while shooting 40% from the 3-point line during his three years at the perennial Frontier power.  Kellen redshirted his first season with the Saints and will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Orediggers.

"Kellen took the past year off to follow his brother Jordan and the Griz and to get focused on what he really wants to accomplish.  After time away, he is very excited for the academic challenge at Tech and feels he has something to prove on the court.  I, too, was a student-athlete transfer within the Frontier and totally understand what Kellen is going through.  I had a great transfer experience and am eager to help Kellen realize his full academic and athletic potential as an Oredigger," concluded Larson.

Kellen will pursue a degree in Civil Engineering and is the son of Pete and Doris Hasquet of Missoula.
