Tech Volleyball signs Phelan
The Montana Tech women’s volleyball program has added another player to next season’s roster.
It was announced Wednesday that Lacey Phelan, a 5-foot-10 three-sport athlete from Missoula Big Sky, has committed to the Orediggers.
She will graduate this May with nine varsity letters and a 3.8 grade-point average. Phelan is a member of the National Honor Society and has been named Academic All-State for three years. She plans on majoring in applied health science while attending Montana Tech, a press release said.
Phelan was an outside hitter for the Eagles last season while earning second-team Western AA All-Conference and Class AA All-State honors.
“Lacey is a tremendous athlete,” Montana Tech head coach Marilyn Tobin said. “She has great court awareness, both in the front row and back row, making her an excellent passer, defensive player, and front row player.
“She also excels in the classroom, making her a perfect fit for our Montana Tech volleyball team.” |

Tech Advances in Frontier Tourney
By Standard Staff
BILLINGS — Montana Tech stumbled out of the gates, but was still able to power past MSU-Northern in four games in the opening round of the Frontier Conference volleyball tourney Friday at Rocky Mountain College’s Fortin Center.
The Orediggers fell 30-26 to the Skylights before recording wins of 30-28, 30-18 and 30-25.
“Northern came out and played great tonight,” said Tech coach Marilyn Tobin. “They played fantastic defense, and they played tough tonight. Some of their players really hit well, but I think we had more confidence.”
After losing the first game, Tech was facing another defeat in game two.
“In the second game they were really in a situation to win, but we came back and won right at the end and that switched out the momentum of the match,” Tobin said.

Diggers upset Westminster
By Bruce Sayler of the Montana Standard
Auto-pilot really is automatic, when talking Montana Tech volleyball.
The term is what head coach Marilyn Tobin uses to describe the Orediggers’ play, “when everybody is doing what she is supposed to be doing without thinking about it.” Junior outside hitter Maria “Mo” McNeil was on it, as in on the hit, and on it, as in on auto-pilot, toward the end of game two in Montana Tech’s 22-30, 31-29, 23-30, 30-26, 15-7 upset of nationally ranked Westminster Friday night.

Orediggers Sweep Saints
By Bruce Sayler, of The Montana Standard
In October sports mode, the Montana Tech volleyball team has some power hitters in its lineup. And Saturday’s 30-22, 30-22, 30-25 Frontier Conference acing of Carroll College Saturday afternoon put them on center stage.
Katie Daly, CoreyAnne Russell and Maria McNeill combined for 29 of the Orediggers’ 47 kills into the Kelvin Sampson court inside the Tech HPER Complex. And a good many of them were hard, resoundingly hard or damn hard.
Cassie Hodges also added 11 kills to the attack. All four front-liners stand 6 feet or taller.
“It’s great to win in three (games),” Montana Tech head coach Marilyn Tobin said. “I think we kept our intensity level pretty high. We hit a little slump every once in awhile, but we played hard and were intense.
“As a team, we hit .307, which is really, really good. And everyone (Tech hitters) was in the .300s. That a really good hitting day when all the hitters are in the .300s. Jodi (Hogart) did a great job of taking passes that tangled in the net, popping them out and making them hittable.” Hodges hit .364 to lead the Orediggers in the hitting category, Daly .360, Russell and McNeil .354 each, Hogart. 333 and Samantha Sheble .300.

13 and Counting for Tech
Bruce Sayler of The Montana Standard
Lucky 13 actually had a lot more to do with skill.
Montana Tech rolled past Montana State-Northern, challenged seriously in the third game, 30-22, 30-19, 32-30 Saturday evening in a Frontier Conference college women’s volleyball match.
The win was the Orediggers’ 13th in a row and came on the Kelvin Sampson Court in the Tech HPER Complex, and was played before a sizeable and boisterous homecoming celebration-bolstered turnout.
“I’m very pleased with the win,” Montana Tech head coach Marilyn Tobin said. “It’s great to be at 13 straight now, but our biggest challenge lies ahead next week with road games at L-C (Lewis-Clark State) and Westminster.” Consistency was the Orediggers’ model for their latest victory. Katie Daly, CoreyAnne Russell and Cassie Hodges shared the kills lead with 10 apiece, and Daly also led in digs with seven as the 38 were total were divided among 10 team members.
“I thought Northern, at times, played real well,” Tobin said. “Their hitters hit hard and their setter did a nice job. But they were up-and-down, I thought.
“I thought we played steady and that was the difference.” The Orediggers seldomed trailed. They took the lead for good in the first game at 12-11 when Daly and Cassie Hodges combined on a double block. Daly, ranked 16th nationally in individual blocking, had 6.5 for the match. Montana Tech, as a team, ranks 13th in NAIA at 3.7 blocks a game, Tobin said.
After the double block, the Orediggers kept ahead, pulling away toward the end of the game. Maria McNeil had a serving run that took the advantage to 27-17. Later Daly closed the game out with a pair of kills, one off a Jodi Hogart quick set for game point, and the other off a true set by Hogart for the win.

Tech Digs Western
By Bruce Sayler, of The Montana Standard
Montana Tech had some searing runs and moments punctuated by big hits in sweeping Montana-Western in a college volleyball match Thursday night on the Kelvin Sampson court in the Tech HPER Complex.
The scores were 30-15, 30-21, 30-18 in the Frontier Conference contest.
Western had some issues that made the battle with the Orediggers even tougher. The Bulldogs were at a height disadvantage, weren’t as experienced as the Orediggers, even though no seniors are on the Montana Tech roster, and had three players sidelined by injuries and another, recovering from an injury, who played only sparingly.
The Orediggers might not have been quite as sharp as their head coach, Marilyn Tobin, would have liked, but they were impressive enough for a pretty big home crowd to cheer. And they were dominant in the match.
“I think it was a great team win,” Tobin said. “Everybody contributed in some way.
“One of our goals today was to keep our intensity level high. For the most part, we did. That’s where we’ve been struggling, being on an emotional roller coaster.” The victory was Montana Tech’s 11th in a row after an 0-4 start on the season. It also made the Orediggers 3-0 in conference play. The Bulldogs remain winless through their 13 matches this year, including three conference counters. Head coach Katie Howells conducted a lengthy post-match meeting with her team in the locker room after the Thursday match and was not available for comment.

Tech throttles Carroll
From the Montana Standard
Not that there was anything ho-hum about Montana Tech’s previous eight volleyball victories this season, but Wednesday’s 30-27, 30-19, 30-28 whipping of Carroll College came in the Frontier Conference opener, away from home in the Saints’ P.E. Center and against a traditional league power.
“I’m very excited to win and very excited to win in three,” Orediggers head coach Marilyn Tobin said.
The win was Montana Tech’s ninth straight, too, after an 0-4 start on the season. Carroll fell to 6-7 overall.

'Diggers Make it Eight Straight
The Standard Staff
HELENA — Saturday may have been a different day, but the results stayed the same for Montana Tech’s volleyball squad.
The Orediggers downed No. 12 Lee University on Friday and added two more victories on Saturday at Carroll College’s invitational. The wins over Minot State and Dixie State give the ’Diggers an 8-4 record. They’ve had eight straight marks in the win column after starting out 0-4.
Tech beat Minot 30-20, 30-22, 34-32 and upended Dixie 30-17, 30-21, 28-30, 30-28.
“Overall, these were two really good team wins for us,” Tech volleyball coach Marilyn Tobin said. “Everybody contributed somewhere and we’re really happy to go into conference match play with confidence and a winning record.
“We can’t wait to start our conference season.” Tobin and her crew don’t have to wait long. Tech takes on Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College in conference road matchups on Wednesday and Thursday. Carroll also closed out the weekend with three victories.
